Pipeline Development

For many companies, recruitment of under-represented minorities for professional and management positions presents a particular hurdle to overcome. Current research shows that even as their percentages in the population continue to grow, high school graduation rates for African American, American Indian and Latino students lag behind that of white high school students by 20% or more.

That gap leads to a smaller pool of college graduates and an even smaller pool of candidates with graduate degrees from which to choose to fill professional and managerial positions in the corporate world. For example, relying on U.S. Department of Education data, Diverse Issues in Higher Education reported in 2006 that the country could expect only 87 newly awarded doctorate degrees in engineering to African American and Latino graduates and only 27 such degrees in mathematics to all under-represented minorities. As corporations become more technology-based in their operations, it will become ever more challenging to reap the benefits of a diverse workforce.
